Cool Mist Humidifiers For Babies - The Safest Choice

Cool mist humidifiers for babies are often recommended over the alternative warm mist type. This is primarily due to safety concerns, however there are other factors to consider as well. When deciding on the best type of humidifier for your baby's room, you should base your decision on your baby's needs as well as what you feel is the safest and best choice for your particular situation.

Warm mist humidifiers have a heating coil inside that boils distilled water, so that it can be expelled into the air as a fine spray. If your baby or toddler is able to get around the room by themselves, and if you plan to leave the humidifier on while the child is sleeping in the room alone, you may want to consider an alternative option. If your child has respiratory problems and your pediatrician recommended a warm air humidifier, you will need to take extra precautions to ensure your child's safety. One idea is to buy a table top unit, rather than a floor-standing unit, as the humidifier will be up out of the child's reach.

Cool mist humidifiers for babies seem to be the more safe choice. They also have many other advantages. For example, rather than sending heated vapor into the room, they expel a fine mist. This is often less disconcerting for a young child. During hot summer months, they also help to lower the temperature of a room, which can be a plus in adding to your baby's comfort. Another plus is that they generally use a lot less energy to run compared to warm mist humidifiers. This can translate into greater savings if you need to run the humidifier in the child's room all the time.

Cool mist humidifiers can require a little more maintenance and cleaning, and the filter will need to be replaced from time to time. In order to prevent bacteria or mold growing on the wick, it is also advised to buy an antibacterial cartridge to add to the water tank. Warm mist humidifiers boil the water, thus they do not have any problems with bacteria or mold, nor do they require filters.

Noise can be another issue with cold mist humidifiers, depending on the humidifier type, though whether or not this is a problem will depend entirely on your baby. Some babies are light sleepers who waken with the slightest change in sound, whereas others seem to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the humidifier fan. Overall, however, given the safety concerns, the usual recommendation is to buy cool mist humidifiers for babies.
